Posebno ovakva Turska.

Ekonomski partner != strateški partner

I live in North Eastern Turkey - I am the only Englishman in town - and follow the Turkish political scene with great interest. Tayyip is beyond any doubt the most successful politician Turkey has ever had. He has stayed ahead of the game by switching alliances. Within Turkey there are basically three main trends:
a) Socially conservative Islam
b) Liberalism
c) 1930s style nationalism - Kemalism

The left in Turkey was more or less destroyed in the coups of 1960 and 1980. Although the army 'stepped in' in 1980 to stop ınternescine strife between the left and the right - and I know people who did not finish university n those days because the campuses were so violent -it was mainly the left who took it in the neck. So, be in no doubt, Tayyip's foes have a lot to answer for. Note, too, Evren, the leader of the coup, restored Islam as a counterweight to Marxism. The USA, confronted by the Islamic Revolution over the border, was delighted by this and began its search for 'safe Islam', which culminated in Fetullah. Evren2s nationalist rejection of the Kurdish claims to identity, brought about the PKK. He actually said, the Kuds did not exist as a people and the name arose from the sound their feet made walking in the mountain snow. He caleld them 'mountain kurds'.

Tayyip's initial support came in part from those who wished to see an end to army tutelage - the right expressed by the officer corps to intervene whenever Ataturk's secular legacy was at risk. In the early years of the century he had the support of many liberals. He had himself been jailed by the army. He permitted Kurdish language media, allowed the publication of previously banned texts - like the COmmunist Manifesto, and his government was the first to spend more on education than arms.

This changed markedly with Gezi Park, when Tayyip, by now on the international stage, orderd the crackdown on the demonstrators, who in any case lacked any cohesion, leadership or polcy. He then became the bete noir of the liberals and continued his popularity among the Islamists and the Kurds in the street.

His dispute with Gülem over the crammers, and Gülen then making use of his links within the police and judiciary to 'expose' alleged corruption, and the consequent coup and dismissal of many in the public sector, together with tighter controls on the media, decimated his support among the 'Grey Turks' - educated and cosmopolitan Islamists. This has been shown by the narrow squeaks he has suffered in the last couple of votes.

He then has fallen back on the support of the Nationalists - particularly the 'National Movement Party', MHP. Particularly that part of the MHP that still supports the aging Devlet Bahceli. The MHP is a respeectable party and though its policy may be reminiscent of the National Front, it is supported by a surprising number of people. These same people will sometimes say genocide is the only answeer to the kurdish problem. Compared with these, Tayyip is the soul of moderation.

The MHP and, Bahceli in particular, have a visceral hatred of all the minority groups in Turkey. To keep the nationalists in the population on board, Tayyip's rhetoric has grown fiercer. But make no mistake, it would have been political suicide for any politician not to make a stand aganst the growing power of the Kurds. Imagine the USA funding the Provisionals across the border from Ulster; or the Chinese running a militia in Tijuana. This is why, apart from sentimentality regarding the army which appears in the mentality of every Turk (they begin the education at an early age) the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) supported the operation. The CHP purports to be social democrats but there are many old-style fascists lurking in their ranks.

Among the Kurds themselves there are problems. The younger Kurds ar looking for a political solution and there was talk of an alliance between those in the CHP tired of Kiliçtaroglu's leadership and the Popular Democrat Party (HDP) of the Kurds led by Demirtaş. The leadership of this group are now n jail, and I imagine no one is happier about this than Bahçeli, whose support actually dipped below that of the HDP, unless it is the old men of the PKK in the mountains of Iraq.

You also have to be clear that support for Atatürk as an icon remains high. Tayyip uses the republican flag all the time now, when during Gezi Park it was hung from balconies as a sign of opposition to him. Any military action he akes against the Kurds will only enhance his popularity and may improve things for the 2019 election.

In the meantime, there are new shopping centres and new cars on the road. Things are looking very good for him, while the MHP has split - the 'Good Party' as it is imaginatively called, led by Meral Akşener, is now in operation. The CHP is inactive, dreaming of the glory days of the one-party Kemalist supremacy, The HDP has lost its leaership. What could possibly go wrong?
